Just Add Bubbles | Calgary Family Adventure Photography
Rule #1 of how to run a photography session with kids—when in doubt add bubbles. And snacks. Preferably not at the same time. That’s what I love about Adventure Sessions. There is no timeline. We aren’t trying to get kids to behave a certain way or wear clothes that they find uncomfortable. It’s a time to play and focus on just enjoying your time together. It’s a time to let the kids just be kids….and, the parents, too ;) Let’s blow bubbles, eat watermelon and run through the wild grasses of southern Alberta. That’s the best kind of photography session.
Mountain Adventure Session | Calgary Family Photography
Classic Dana Adventure Session ;) That’s what I’m calling this one…ice skating in the mountains, exploring a snow pile together as a family…this is what makes family photography sessions FUN!! My favourite type of portrait sessions are Adventure sessions where we take the time to get those family portraits you crave, but also the more candid, documentary moments that don’t happen in a traditional portrait setting. I’m grateful for families that are looking for something more out of their photography experience and trust me with my crazy ideas!! Even when it means putting on the teeniest pair of skates EVER!!!
This family was in Banff for a hockey tournament and took the time out of their busy schedule to slow down and have fun together!! Their mom is an awesome photographer herself(http://www.lifeandportraits.com/) so go check out her work. And, scroll to the end so that you see all the super fun photographs we created together.
Port Whitby Pier | Adventure Session in Whitby, Ontario
When I was in Ontario in July, this mom(who is also an amazing photographer) invited me to her studio for a photographer’s meetup(which was super awesome!). Then, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting her beautiful little family for a fun evening at Whitby Pier. Her beautiful dog had me wanting another puppy, but Bob has put the brakes on that desire for the time being—but, don’t you think Pughville could use a boston terrier? I’m thinking…um, yes we could!!
I’m on a blogging roll…I’m hoping to try to do this more often so people can see an entire session all together. Instagram is nice, but this is better.
Thanks!
Dana :)

Why have an at home session?
This is something I have been talking about since 2007. So, 12 years!!! Wow. At home sessions are a wonderful way to document your life in this moment. Kids rooms change and grow with them and, as many of my clients tell you, I always make an effort to document kids in their rooms. For the families that I have seen over and over again, this has provided them with a wonderful collection that shows not only how their child has grown, but how their room has changed as well. If only I had a photograph of the room I shared with my sister—complete with pink shag rug and daisy wallpaper. Sometimes with a masking tape line running down the centre which we dare not cross for fear of retribution.
It’s also a wonderful environment for small children who don’t like to sit still. This gives them the opportunity to have their photographs taken in a space where they are comfortable. It can be intimidating meeting a photographer—especially when they have a large camera. People sometimes feel like they have to perform(especially children). Being in their own home allows small children to take their time to warm up to me while they show me their favourite things and we play with familiar toys.
An at home Adventure Session means we spend time together focusing on some of your favourite activities. This allows me to capture some more ‘documentary’ type images while also taking kids aside for a few portraits as well. This family wanted to keep things super casual. We had a fun evening together just hanging out before supper in mid-October. They had such a cute house—filled with character. And, their children showed me the ropes…
I’m taking a limited number of Adventure Sessions in 2019 and space is filling fast. If you are interested in a spot, please contact me sooner rather than later to discuss the details.
